WATCH: Demi Lovato Breaks Down & Has To Restart Performance Of “Anyone” At Grammys [Video]

This year’s Grammy Awards was an emotional one, with the ceremony starting with a heartfelt tribute to Kobe Bryant by Alicia Keys and Boyz II Men. However, their performance of “It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday,” was not the only emotional moment at the show, as Demi Lovato performed live for the first time in over a year. The pop star took to the stage Sunday to debut a new song, a piano ballad called, “Anyone.”

Lovato initially struggled to perform, becoming overwhelmed with emotion during the first line of the song, but after encouragement from the audience and a restart, the pop star found her footing. In the song, Lovato sings about her struggles and self doubt about her life and musical career. “I feel stupid when I sing / Nobody’s listening to me / Nobody’s listening,” she sings. The chorus to the song is Lovato pleading with God to, “please, send me anyone,” to help her in her time of need. During the performance, Lovato shed a tear. At the end of the song, the audience gave the pop star a standing ovation.

In an interview with Apple Music a few days before the song’s premiere, Lovato revealed the circumstances she found herself in when she wrote the song. Lovato wrote and originally recorded the song four days before her near-death overdose and a month after her song “Sober,” where she sang about her relapse into drugs and alcohol. When she was initially recording the song, she would listen to her lyrics and interpret them as a, “cry for help,” Lovato revealed in the interview. Lovato also discussed that a week after her overdose, she was going over the songs she had recorded in the days before. She decided then that if she were ever able to perform again, she wanted “Anyone,” to be the first thing she sang.
