The Walking Dead Season 7 trailer will debut at Comic-Con on July 22 — until then, spoilers regarding the role Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan will play in the upcoming season has surfaced this week.
Negan was introduced during the Season 6 finale of The Walking Dead, shocking viewers when he killed someone, using his baseball bat named Lucille. However, the identity of the victim won’t be revealed until the season seven premiere.
Fans will reportedly get a glimpse at what’s inside Negan’s head in the upcoming season — showrunner Scott Gimple teased before the finale that the character is “not a bad guy at all,” despite his villainous entrance.
The Walking Dead comics depict Negan as a complex character, who has reasonable motivations for his actions.
“He’s not a psychopath, and in some ways, he has this bizarre sort of empathy to him,” Gimple told EW about the character. “It’s bizarre that he actually does have some empathy and he does have a system and he does have, in some ways, even reason.”
In a recent interview with Variety, Morgan shared that Negan will be in control of Rick’s (Andrew Lincoln) group following his killing — Rick’s group killed a large number of the Saviors while they were sleeping.
“I think there’s a lot of similarities between him [Negan] and Rick,” Morgan said. “It’s just now I’m going to butt heads with Rick and his group and he’s gonna have to deal with me and the Saviors.”
“I try to not look at characters as if they’re sociopaths when I’m playing them,” Morgan told TV Guide. “I think they’re completely rational human beings! That being said, [Negan’s] got his own motivations.”
Morgan also added that the storyline on television is going to be parallel to the comics.
