The Walking Dead picked up in its midseason finale with Bob (Maximiliano Hernández) still struggling to free his hands from the ropes binding him, leaving him vulnerable to an oncoming horde of Walkers.

Rick (Andrew Lincoln) follows Bob, cutting down Walkers one by one and driving into others with his squad car. When he gets to Bob, he bumps into him and realizes that his head is wounded and that he likely broke his back. Instead of taking Bob back – or leaving him to be feed for the Walkers – Rick executes him.

Meanwhile, Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam) is making his way through the woods, running into the infamous cannibal camp. He’s moving outside an old school building in which tens of undead are milling about, determined to break free. Eventually, they do break through the door and begin to chase after Gabriel, who manages to stay ahead of them. Unfortunately, he leads them directly to the church.

Michonne (Danai Gurira) slashes through the door brace to let Gabriel in through the fortifications, consequently letting in Walkers as well. Michonne and Carl (Chandler Riggs), with Judith strapped to his back, then escape the church with Gabriel in tow. Together, the three of them slaughter the Walkers and then lock the remaining ones within the church. When the others show up, Abraham uses the fire truck to seal up the church’s entrance. Glenn (Steven Yeun) reveals to Michonne that Eugene had lied to them all and then Michonne tells Maggie (Lauren Cohan) that Beth (Emily Kinney) is alive and that there’s a plan in motion to save her.

In Atlanta, Rick returns and starts talking to Daryl (Norman Reedus) about what they’re going to do next and if he thinks Dawn (Christine Woods) will bargain with them. Tyreese (Chad L. Coleman) and Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green), meanwhile, have an intimate discussion about how they’ve changed over the course of the apocalypse. Sasha shows her evolution in the age of Walkers by taking one out without hesitation while Rick and Daryl treated with the cops.

At the hospital, Dawn’s nerves appear to be fraying. Her men have gone radio silent, bringing flashbacks of the betrayal of Captain Hansen, who she ultimately chose to kill. Dawn also reveals she was unbothered by Beth killing one of the other cops, which is overheard by Officer O’Donnell. Dawn tries to talk O’Donnell down, but he won’t back off. As a result, Dawn and Beth feed him to some Walkers.

In keeping with the deal, Rick delivers two hostage cops to Grady to get both Beth and Carol back. Everything is going smoothly and according to plan until Dawn demands to have Noah (Tyler James Williams) back. Dawn and Rick object, as do Dawn’s own people, who were hoping for a peaceable deal. Noah, however, is willing to go and hugs Beth goodbye. Beth seems willing to let her friend go back to Grady – until she hears Dawn tell him she knew he’d be back. Beth pulls out a pair of scissors and stabs Dawn with them. Dawn, in the heat of the moment, puts a bullet through Beth’s head. Daryl then returns the favor, shooting Dawn between the eyes. When Maggie arrives, they have to tell her that Beth is gone.

Miles outside the city, Morgan Jones (Lennie James) is still trying to find Rick and the group. He passes the cannibal camp and follows markers to the church. There, he finds Abraham’s note that references both Rick and Washington.
