The much-anticipated The Walking Dead companion series has received a two-season order from AMC ahead of its premiere.
The series, untitled as of yet, will follow a group of survivors in the same apocalyptic, zombie-infested world inhabited by Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and the gang in The Walking Dead. The new series, however, will take place a couple thousand miles away from Atlanta in Los Angeles, California.
“We take incredibly seriously the notion of building a satisfying companion series to the number one show on television. From the beginning of The Walking Dead on AMC, we’ve been asked questions about what was going on in other parts of the zombie apocalypse, and what it looked like as the world really did ‘turn,'” Charlie Collier, AMC president, said in a statement. “Through this new series, we’re going to find out.”
“Robert Kirkman, Dave Erickson and their writing team, along with an incomparable set of producers, cast and crew have created something remarkable and clearly distinct,” Collier added. “We respectfully follow the request of Monty Python as we bring out (the latest of) our Dead.”
Robert Kirkman, The Walking Dead creator, expressed his appreciation for the vote of confidence from AMC in a statement.
“We feel empowered by this two-season commitment, a serious show of faith from our network partner AMC,” Kirkman said. “I personally take it as a sign that they believe, like we do, that we’ve accomplished our goal of developing something original that can pay tribute to the original show and expand the world I created while at the same time having something new to say with this story. I’m very grateful that we now have the opportunity to tell this amazing story and show the fans that we really haven’t scratched the surface yet when it comes to The Walking Dead.”
The companion series to The Walking Dead will star Missing and Gang Related star Cliff Curtis as divorced teacher Sean Cabrera, who has a son named Cody. Gone Girl‘s Kim Dickens will play a woman named Miranda, while Frank Dillane and Alycia Debnam Carey will play siblings Nick and Ashley Tompkins.
Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Greg Nicotero and David Alpert, who’ve all worked on The Walking Dead, are on board as executive producers.
The untitled series’ first season will debut over the summer and run for six, one-hour episodes. It will return for a second season in 2016.
