‘The Voice’ Season 13 Finale Part 1 Recap: Chloe Kohanski Favored To Win Competition

The Voice is just one episode away from crowning a winner for season 13.

THE VOICE SEASON FINALE PART 1 RECAP

Going into the first part of the finale are the Top 4 – Team Adam Levine‘s Addison Agen, Team Blake Shelton‘s Chloe Kohanski, Team Miley Cyrus‘ Brooke Simpson, and Team Blake’s Red MarlowJennifer Hudson is the only judge left without a competitor in the finale. Each contestant will sing an original song, a cover, and a duet with his/her coach.

First up was Agen, who sang “Humble and Kind” by Tim McGraw. She hasn’t done much in the way of country covers this season, and the sudden change seemed a great opportunity; however, the song choice didn’t quite fit her image.

Kohanski took the stage next with “Wish I Didn’t Love You,” an original. And luckily it fits her style to a T. While the song shows off her skills, it also gives light to some flaws, but overall, this performance is a chance to see what she might do with her own record, and it sounds good.

Simpson then sings a custom-written song by coach Cyrus called “What is Beautiful.” The song suits her, but also exposes her – the lyrics remind everyone that Simpson has to belt out songs to get recognized, and given her probable trajectory of tomorrow’s results, it doesn’t quite match.

Marlow is the last of the final four to perform his first solo song this evening. He goes for “I Pray,” a Marlow original. While the song, of course, contains some obvious tropes, it also shows a unique side to Marlow, and proves that he can write his own lyrics. It sounds like a song on a country radio station.

Between performances, Shelton and Marlow perform a duet, as do Levine and Agen, Cyrus and Simpson, and Shelton and Kohanski. And we’re right back to Marlow. He takes on Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love.” Marlow has brought his all into the finale, and is firing on all cylinders for those votes, but will it really be enough to take down the favorites?

Simpson takes the stage next a sings popular Christmas tune “O Holy Night.” This should bode well for her, considering the effect of “Amazing Grace” had on her standings in this competition. She’s clearly sung this song dozens of times in her family’s traveling ministry, and her comfort with the material shows.

Agen ends her night with her original, “Tennessee Rain.” The country/blues fusion is her strongest performance of the night, so she and Levine are glad they saved it for last. Kohanski ends hers with a cheesy number – “Bette Davis Eyes” by Kim Carnes. It was a risk to end a fantastic competition with this song, but it somehow adds to the type of artist Kohanski could be, so it could pan out.

Tune in tomorrow night on NBC to find out who the winner will be.
