‘The Voice’ Season 13, Episode 20 Recap: The Top 11 Vie For First: Noah Mac & Addison Agen Favorites

Monday on The Voice, the remaining Top 11 contestants all vied for the top spot by singing fan choices.

THE VOICE TOP 11 RECAP

Fans chose the songs for each contestant this time and for the most part did a good job. No singer knocked it out of the park, but no singer tanked their performance either.

First up was Janice Freeman for Team Miley Cyrus. She performed “Shine” by Collective Soul. The choice was refreshing, as it’s not a commonly performed song on reality TV, but still a solid song, and Freeman is clearly having a blast with it. She does a few of her signature unintelligible scream-sings, but overall the judges are pleased.

Next up is Red Marlow for Team Blake Shelton, and he gets “The Dance” by Garth Brooks. Despite his inability to hit some of the low notes of the fan favorite song, Marlowe still fits perfectly with the song with his vocal style and on a storytelling level. So even with some faltering vocals, the judges still liked the performance.

Then for Team Jennifer Hudson we saw Shi’Ann Jones perform “Listen” by Beyoncé. This isn’t the first time Jones has gotten a Beyoncé song on the show, and it’s obvious the two share a lot of vocal qualities, even though the contestant is just 15-years-old. The performance is a little hollow and chaotic, but still compelling in the end.

The first up for Team Adam Levine is Adam Cunningham, who sings “American Girl” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Cunningham may have even more to prove tonight than the others as he was the recipient of an instant save last week. His personality fits the song choice well, but his faulty timing and inability to reach high notes hurts the performance.

Brooke Simpson takes the stage for Team Miley and is assigned Pink’s new hit “What About Us.” While her performance is pretty epic, she decided to honor her Haliwa-Saponi tribe heritage by adding drum tables and backup vocals, which ended up overpowering her own voice a little too much.

Next for Team Jennifer is Davon Fleming, who gets paired with “I Have Nothing” by Whitney Houston. The song ends up switching keys and ranges too many times so we don’t get a true picture of Fleming as an artist. Despite this, most of the singing was fantastic, and the judges are floored.

Next is Ashland Craft for Team Miley with a rendition of “Chicken Fried” by Zac Brown Band. Unfortunately for Craft, the production of her live performance was overdone. In the footage of rehearsals, her voices sounded near perfect, but up on stage there was too much going on, even down to her tasseled denim outfit. If it were just her and her microphone, Craft would be seriously dangerous to the other contestants.

Addison Agen of Team Adam takes the stage next for a performance of Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You.” Her singing is strong and powerful, and Levine notes that Agen has the sort of voice that draws people in, no matter the genre. While not her best performance, Agen will surely have fans voting for her.

Back for Team Blake is Keisha Renee with a rendition of “It Matters to Me” by Faith Hill. Renee’s voice is beautiful but she doesn’t add anything new to the arrangements, and sings it just as Hill does. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it might lead fans to believe that she has nothing more to offer. Still, the performance was great.

Next we have Noah Mac from Team Jennifer singing “Electric Love” by BØRNS. Mac is loving the song choice, thought deciding how to arrange it for a live performance proves a bit of a challenge. In the end, Mac kills the song and proves his worth as a rocker.

Last up for the evening is Chloe Kohanski of Team Blake, who performs “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler. This is apparently the song that we have been waiting for Kohanski to sing, and she nails it. As Shelton puts it, “Ladies and gentlemen, Chloe just set the bar.”
