Blake Shelton and Adam Levine continued to go head-to-head, even picking sides with Christina Aguilera and Pharrell Williams, as the Blind Auditions of The Voice continued.
Ashley Morgan, 26, kicked off Part 4 of the Blind Auditions with a bang, performing Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” The background singer got Pharrell and Blake to press their buttons, and they were both impressed with Ashley. Blake and Pharrell got into a little bit, pitching themselves to each other instead of to Ashley. Blake tried to sell her on being a unique artist on his team, saying, “I have not been this excited about an artist on this stage in a long freakin’ time. I love you.” But, Pharrell got Christina’s endorsement when Ashley said she wants to make music that can help change the world.
Ashley: Team Pharrell
Koryn Hawthorn, a mature 16-year-old, auditioned with Emily Sandé’s “My Kind of Love.” Koryn’s impressive range and control got Christina to press her button, followed soon by Pharrell. Pharrell connected with Koryn, complimenting her maturity and potential, but Christina has actually lived that life – having a mature voice at a young age, and she told Koryn that she wanted to learn the story behind her voice.
Koryn: Team Christina
Lexi Dávila, another teen (she just turned 17), auditioned with “Dreaming of You.” Lexi was a bit more nervous, but both Blake and Adam heard her potential and pressed their buttons despite any vocal hiccups. Blake brought out his long resume of helping young singers get over their nerves, but Adam won her over with his plan to help Lexi improve her vocals.
Lexi: Team Adam
Audition Montage:
Josh Batstone, another high school student with dreams of making it as a pop singer, went Team Adam.
Katelyn Read and Ameera Delandro went Team Christina.
Bay Brooks, a pop artist, was picked up by Team Blake.
Brenna Yaeger, 19, took a chance auditioning with Miranda Lambert’s “The House That Built Me.” It’s always a risk auditioning with a Miranda Lambert song; she is married to Blake Shelton after all. Brenna connected to the song, and she sold it, getting both Adam and Blake to turn their chairs. Adam tried to woo Brenna, but, as usual with aspiring country artists, Adam didn’t really have a chance.
Brenna: Team Blake
Jeremy Gaynor, 30, a Staff Sergeant in the US Army, auditioned with “Superstar,” and his cute life story is sure to earn him some votes. Jeremy also happened to have the vocals to back it up, and he got Christina to turn before he finished the first verse. All the other three coaches eventually also turned their chairs. Adam complimented Jeremy’s stage presence and natural ability to perform, but Christina proved she was passionate about Jeremy and wanted to make him a star. “Jeremy, your talent is pretty undeniable, and it is the reason that I continue to come back to The Voice,” Christina told him.
Jeremy: Team Christina
Jack Gregori, 37, the first old-school country artist of the night auditioned with Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire.” His country swagger failed to get Blake to press his button, but Adam turned his chair around and, by default, picked up the country artist he’s been waiting for.
Jack: Team Adam
Briar Jonnee, 20, a Mississippi girl, auditioned with “Take A Bow.” Briar had a few nerves that peeked through her performance, but Blake and Pharrell both turned around for her emotional delivery. Blake tried to charm Briar, but she was more swayed by Pharrell’s promise to help her work on her stage presence and get her to really connect with her audience. “You can’t really communicate to people if you’re holding things back, and I just thought maybe we could work on those things,” Pharrell told her.
Briar: Team Pharrell
Brian Johnson, 24, had a long road to The Voice: bullied in high school for being chubby and having a high singing voice, Brian didn’t really embrace singing until college. Brian had a ton of energy performing “Reason to Believe,” getting both Blake and Adam to push their buttons. Adam compliments his natural ability to connect to audiences, but Blake gets Brian by saying he wants Brian on his team because he doesn’t have anyone else like him. “I am an avid fan of yours already,” Blake told him.
Brian: Team Blake
Corey Kent White, a 20-year-old aspiring singer, auditioned with “Chicken Fried,” and impressed the coaches with his perfect pitch. For a long time, it looked like Corey was going to be left behind, but Pharrell pressed his button last minute, inspiring Blake to follow. Pharrell desperately wanted Corey on his team, walking up to him on the stage and promising that he can do country as well as Blake can, but Corey knows what he wants: a record contract. Blake has gotten country artists from The Voice to country radio, and Pharrell just couldn’t compete with that track record.
Corey: Team Blake
There are still five slots left before going into the battle rounds: Pharrell still has two spots to fill, and Christina, Adam and Blake all have one each. The Blind Auditions continue on The Voice Monday at 8 p.m. on NBC.
