‘The Voice’ Recap: Blind Auditions Part 3 – Christina Picks Up India Carney, The Only 4-Chair Turn Of The Night

The Voice blind auditions continue and the competition between coaches Adam Levine, Pharrell Williams, Blake Shelton and Christina Aguilera is getting tough.

The Voice Blind Auditions Part 3

Kelsie May, 15, was the first Country artist of the night, singing Loretta Lynn’s “You’re Lookin’ At Country.” Blake turns around first, and, though both Christina and Pharrell push their buttons and to try to get Kelsie on their team, the fact that Kelsie is 1) a teenager, and 2) a Country singer makes her team Blake almost by default.

Kelsie: Team Blake

Kimberly Nichole, 32, a rocker chick who performs in custom-made tutus in New York City, auditioned with “Nutbush City Limits.” Blake hit his button first, and it looked like he had Kimberly all to himself, but then Pharrell pushed his button at the very last minute. He just had to, he said, and Blake was crushed. Blake was a bit out of his element connecting to Kimberly as a soul/rock singer, while Pharrell was quick to bond with Kimberly over her genre, telling Kimberly, “I feel your soul, and I feel your blues.”

Kimberly: Team Pharrell

Michael Leier, 20, sang “Last Kiss” for his blind audition, impressing Adam and Blake with his take on the song. Michael is breaking out of his shell with The Voice – he performed with a band all through high school, but now he’s on his own. Even though Adam spent the majority of his pitch talking about Pearl Jam, he still was able to convince Micheal to join his team when he told him, “You gotta understand where someone comes from if you’re going to know where they want to go.”

Michael: Team Adam

Travis Ewing, 23, a musician from Louisiana, came to his blind audition with a jazzy, bluesy take on Destiny’s Child’s classic “Say My Name.” The original arrangement surprised the judges, and caught Christina’s attention right away. She was the first to press her button, and was later followed by Blake and Pharrell. Christan lobbied hard for Travis, but Travis, a wannabe producer in his own right connected with Pharrell when he told Travis, “The one thing I’m relentless about is mixing things up. I would really love a shot a assisting you in your vision.”

Noelle Bybee, a teen pop singer went Team Pharrell.
Bre’nae DeBarge, an R&B artist, and pop singer James McNeice both went Team Adam.

Sonic, 34, was actually signed to a label at the age of 14, but after four years and no album to show for it, she parted ways with her label and went the band route. When she’s not performing with her band, the stylish singer works as a freelance makeup artist and jewelry designer. Sonic auditioned with Sam Smith’s “Money on My Mind,” and she was barely finished with the first line when both Adam and Christina pushed their buttons. Christina was completely in love with Sonic’s wide range and potential, and she made it known. “Me and you. Let’s do this, let’s do this, let’s do this!” Xtina exclaimed, holding her arms out for Sonic.

Sonic: Team Christina

Jacob Rummell, 18, auditioned with Bruno Mars’ “Count on Me” and gave the coaches the classic gender shock when they turned around and saw that the high voice they may have assumed belonged to a woman actually belonged to a young man. Blake and Adam were the only coaches to turn around, and they were ready to fight for Jacob. While Pharrell was kicking himself for failing to press his button, Blake pitched Jacob, promising to help him find, as Xtina called it, his “inner fire.” Adam also made an intense pitch, likening Jacob to a young Michael Jackson, and even trying to bring Pharrell into it. But, in the most surprising move of the night, Jacob went with the coach he liked the best: Blake.

Jacob: Team Blake

Barry Minniefield, 52, a classic soul singer with a huge stage presence, got Adam to turn his chair with his rendition of “Me and Mrs. Jones.” Adam seemed happy that, for once, he didn’t have to fight to get the artist on his team, and Barry, too, seemed just as content to be on Team Adam.

Barry: Team Adam

Blind audition montage #2:
Nicolette Maré, an indie pop singer went Team Adam.
Clinton Washington was picked up by Team Christina.
Matt Snook, another country boy, went Team Blake.

India Carney, 21, a UCLA student, got all four coaches to turn around with her audition of “New York State of Mind.” India is a classically trained singer, which immediately sparked Christina’s trained ear. Adam, Blake and Pharrell tried their very best to get India on their teams, showering her with love and praise, but Christina had an advantage: as India’s childhood idol, it wasn’t even a choice. “You are a vocal beast, and I want to take a woman to the end of the line, please let me be your coach,” Christina told India.

India: Team Christina

BONUS: See Adam turn chairs with his own ‘blind audition’ performance of Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer.”

The Voice blind auditions continue Tuesday at 8 p.m. on NBC.
