‘The Voice’ Premiere Recap: Alicia Keys & Miley Cyrus Make Their Debuts As Coaches

The Voice premiered its 11th season Monday night, with Alicia Keys and Miley Cyrus making their debuts as coaches alongside Adam Levine and Blake Shelton.

The Voice Premiere Recap

Though Keys is new on the show, during her first night in the swivel chair, she managed to convince three talented individuals to join her team.

The first singer Keys picked up was Chicagoan Jason Warrior, who sang Stevie Wonder‘s “Living for the City.” It had come down to a battle between Keys and Levine, who Shelton opined wasn’t the right choice for the R&B singer. Keys went two-for-two last night, next getting Dave Moisan on her team. Once again Shelton steered the singer away from Levine, despite the fact that he sang in a similar falsetto. Keys last addition to her team on The Voice premiere was Christian Cuevas, whose mother was hoping he’d pick the “No One” singer as his mentor.

Shelton, like Keys, kicked off the season with three team members. American Idol alum Sundance Head performed Otis Redding’s “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” winning over both Shelton and Levine, but opting for the country singer. Shelton’s second addition was former NBA player Derek Harper’s daughter Dana Harper, who sang “Jealous” by Nick Jonas. Fifteen-year-old Gabe Broussard also joined Shelton’s team.

Cyrus managed to get two aspiring stars on her team, starting with R&B singer Courtnie Ramirez. Though Ramirez seemed headed to Team Alicia, Cyrus wooed her with the promise of getting the younger vote. Cyrus also managed to make a case for herself as a coach to Ali Caldwell after she sang an impressive rendition of Ariana Grande‘s “Dangerous Woman.”

Levine struggled the most to convince the talented singers to join his team. The lone person he got on board was 16-year-old Riley Elmore, who sang a jazzy take on Frank Sinatra.

The Voice will return with Part 2 of its season premiere Tuesday night on NBC.
