The cover image of Vogue magazine’s February issue of Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris is not the image that both sides agreed on.
Harris wore a powder-blue power suit for her cover image but that photo was swapped with Harris wearing a more casual look with Converse Chuck Taylor sneakers, that she sometimes wore on the campaign trail. The sneaker photo was originally supposed to featured inside the magazine.
The incoming Vice President’s team was unaware of the switched images until they were leaked late Saturday, according to the person involved in negotiations over how she would be featured on the magazine cover. Harris has declined to comment on the incident.
Vogue released a statement of the more informal image of Harris going on the cover for reasons of it capturing her “authentic, approachable nature, which we feel is one of the hallmarks of the Biden-Harris administration.”
The magazine released both images as digital magazine covers to “respond to the seriousness of this moment in history and the role she has to play leading out country forward.” Although, the sneaker wearing Harris photo will be the cover of the printed editions.
In the original cover photo, Harris posed in front of a gold backdrop in light blue suit. In the new cover photo, she is wearing dark slacks and a blazer with sneakers in front of a pink and green background. The pink and green backdrop represent the colors of her college sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha.
Harris will be sworn in as Vice President on January 20.
