A video by AiTelly describing the Titan submersible implosion has become a sensation on Youtube, hitting five million views in only 11 days.
The six-minute video uses animations to show how the implosion that killed five men, Hamish Harding, Shahzada Dawood, his son Suleman Dawood, Paul-Henry Nargeolet and Stockton Rush, would have occurred, including the different factors leading up to the incident.
One of the issues with the submersible was the material used to create it. Instead of utilizing steel, aluminum and titanium, which has successfully been used in other submarines, Ocean Gate used “an experimental design.” Carbon fibers were applied, which can be advantageous as it is a light material, but it has not been studied for deep sea use. The main concern with it is that “it can crack and break suddenly,” which is probably why it is not frequently experimented with.
Due to the use of carbon fibers and the extreme pressure, the Titan imploded, as the pressure near the location of the Titan is about 400 times the amount of pressure compared to that on the surface. This means that the submersible collapsed inwards rather than outwards, which would be an explosion.
The video continues to explain how small the submersible is, only a bit larger than a “small SUV,” and describes the features inside of it, including how the entire submersible was controlled by a video game joystick. This joystick works almost exactly how one would use it to play a simple video game.
AiTelly details each step the Titan had to go through to get down to the Titanic. It begins with a mother ship bringing the Titan to the correct location. Then the submersible is lowered into the ocean while on a platform. The sub will “disengage” from this platform only after it reaches a certain depth. It will continue its descent by the pilot utilizing the joystick to maneuver its way to the Titanic wreck and can move up to four knots.

According to the video, the passengers actually never made it to the wreck and the sub imploded due to a combination of high pressure and “the weak carbon fiber hull.”
Five parts of the Titan were found after a days-long international effort to locate the passengers, as it was initially believed they were still alive and quickly running out of air. They were only 1,600 feet away from the Titanic wreck.
