Mary Kay Letourneau, Vili Fualaau, Audrey and Georgia
Vili Fualaau has filed for legal separation from wife Mary Kay Fualaau (nee Letourneau), 20 years after she was jailed for second-degree child rape.
Letourneau was a 34-year-old teacher when she began her relationship with Fualaau, who was a 12-year-old sixth grader at the time. She was also a married mother of four at the time, in Seattle in 1996. Letourneau was arrested in 1997 when she was pregnant with Fualaau’s first child.
She later admitted to second-degree child rape and was sentenced to six months in prison. Her sentence was later commuted to three months under the condition that Letourneau would not have contact with her former student. Within weeks, however, the pair was caught having sex, and Letourneau was imprisoned for seven years. She gave birth to the couple’s second child while serving her sentence.
The couple secretly wed in 2005 after Letourneau carried out her time in jail. But now Fualaau, now 33, has filed for legal separation leading to divorce from his wife of 12 years. In his petition, Fualaau claims that neither he nor his wife own any property or debts, and that their two children are no longer dependent, so he is asking for a fair division of the couple’s joint assets.
The couple’s story has been adapted into the films That’s My Boy and All-American Girl. It has also been chronicled by Barbara Walters. See a clip below.
