Decorated X Games athlete Travis Pastrana had to halt plans for his NASCAR racing debut Thursday after breaking his right foot and ankle at the X Games in Los Angeles. The 27-year-old motocross star crashed his bike twice attempting a corked 720 in the Moto X Best Trick competition. On the second failed attempt, he sustained the injury when he caught his foot under the bike.
Pastrana was scheduled to make his debut Sunday in Indianapolis as part of NASCAR’s Nationwide Series. He was scheduled to drive in seven events this season for Pastrana-Waltrip Racing, a team he co-owns with Michael Waltrip. His status for those races is now uncertain, as the 16-time X Games gold medalist will likely require surgery on his foot.
In addition to his motocross and NASCAR endeavors, Pastrana stars in the television series Nitro Circus, which follows him and his friends performing daredevil stunts around the world. In June Pastrana became engaged to his girlfriend, professional skateboarder Lyn-Z Adams Hawkins.
There is no official word yet when Pastrana will reschedule his highly anticipated Nationwide debut. The Nationwide Series is considered the proving ground for drivers who wish to race in the Sprint Cup, NASCAR’s most prominent racing circuit. In a statement, Waltrip confirmed that the team had long-term plans for Pastrana’s racing career: "We have a long-term vision with Travis, which includes lots of NASCAR,” reports the Los Angeles Times.
