Simon Cowell may be the most hated judge on American Idol, but he’s looking like a big softy these days. Assembling some of the best musical talent that the world has to offer, Simon’s remake of R.E.M.’s 1992 hit “Everybody Hurts,” which is benefiting the Hope for Haiti charity, is poised to become the best-selling single of the decade in the UK.
Thanks to an intense marketing campaign by the British tabloid The Sun, experts are predicting the song will sell one million copies in its first day of release, Feb. 7. “We’re getting record levels of pre-orders for ‘Everybody Hurts,’ " an HMV spokesmen told the British music website the Daily Star. "It is well on course to become a million seller, easily the biggest selling single for a decade.”
The track includes mostly British music artists such as Robbie Williams, Susan Boyle and Leona Lewis as well as American artists including Bon Jovi, Mylie Cyrus and Mariah Carey. –JOE GALBO
