When nude photos of Scarlett Johansson, 26, were leaked online two weeks ago, the actress stayed mum on the subject. Now Johansson, who has never appeared nude in any of her films, is opening up about the importance of personal privacy, even for those in the public eye.
"Who doesn't want to protect their own privacy?" she said in a CNN interview in Nairobi, Kenya, where Johansson is working with the humanitarian group Oxfam to address the draught and famine that is affecting the area. "Just because you're an actor or make films or whatever doesn't mean you're not entitled to your own personal privacy. If that is sieged in some way, it feels unjust. It feels wrong."
Her sentiments address the now infamous incident in which a group of hackers leaked nude photos of Johansson online after hacking into her cell phone. The outraged Lost in Translation star alerted the FBI who is reportedly zeroing in on the identity of the criminal gang, according to the UK's Daily Mail.
Johansson's divorce from actor Ryan Reynolds in July inspired a great deal of media attention and a flurry of speculation as to who her next beau would be, with names such as Sean Penn hitting the top of the list when the two were photographed on vacation together. Johansson recognizes that being in the public eye comes with some risks. "I think there are certain instances where you give a lot of yourself and finally you have to kind of put your foot down and say, 'Oh wait, I'm taking it back.'"
Johansson is not, however, "taking it back" on the big screen. You can see her in the upcoming Cameron Crowe film, We Bought a Zoo, in which she plays opposite Matt Damon, due to hit theaters this Christmas season. She is currently filming The Avengers with Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Chris Evans.
