A Russian drone hit the steel shelter covering part of the Chernobyl nuclear plant on the morning of Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said. Zelensky said that a “high-explosive warhead” hit the shelter covering Chernobyl Reactor 4, causing a fire to break out, which had since been extinguished. “At present, the radiation background has not increased, and this is constantly monitored.” According to initial estimates, “the damage to the shelter is significant,” Zelensky said. The International Atomic Energy Agency, an organization within the U.N. promoting the safe use of nuclear energy, confirmed that an explosion occurred on the roof of the shelter. In 1986, the nuclear plant suffered a catastrophic meltdown. Chernobyl and Pripyat have been abandoned ever since. The shelter was placed over Chernobyl Reactor 4 in 2016.
