Ricky Gervais has got some 'splaining to do.
After bashing everyone from Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp to Charlie Sheen, Scientologists, God and Hugh Hefner while hosting the Golden Globes on Sunday night, the British comedian has already felt the wrath of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which puts on the awards ceremony.
"Ricky will not be invited back to host the show next year, for sure," an anonymous HFPA member told PopEater. "For sure any movie he makes he can forget about getting nominated. He humiliated the organization last night and went too far with several celebrities whose representatives have already called to complain."
While some of Gervais's jokes were relatively well-received, digs at Robert Downey, Jr., Tim Allen and Tom Hanks prompted those stars to fight back. Downey, Jr., who presented the Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical award, started off his presentation by asking, "Aside from the fact that it's been hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones, I'd say the vibe of the show's pretty good so far, wouldn't you?"
During the ceremony, Gervais did not appear on stage for almost an hour, prompting people to speculate that he had been fired mid-show. Gervais released a statement on Monday denying those rumors. "I did every single introduction I was meant to. There just happened to be a long gap," Gervais said. "This is because I was allowed to choose who I would introduce in advance. I obviously chose presenters who I had the best jokes for. (And who I knew had a good sense of humour). Everyone took it well and the atmosphere backstage and at the after show was great."
The ceremony was watched by 16.99 million viewers, up 5 percent from last year, when Gervais also hosted. —ISHITA SINGH
