Michael Douglas, 65, thinks the odds are on his side to beat the stage IV throat cancer he’s fighting. “Percentages are good…should be about 80%,” Douglas told David Letterman Tuesday night of his chances.
The actor had just finished his first week of an intensive 8-week treatment of chemotherapy and radiation, and spoke candidly about his situation. Stage IV cancer describes a cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. “I am above the neck,” he said, “so nothing’s gone down and the expectations are good.”
Douglas conceded his past behavior contributed to the disease. “This particular cancer is caused by alcohol and drinking,” he said. At the end of the show, Letterman asked Douglas if he could do anything for him, to which the star replied, “Give me a hug.” The two men embraced, as the stage audience applauded. – AMY LEE
