After a disastrous performance on Saturday Night Live a few weeks ago, the much-discussed, much-analyzed, much-maligned/worshipped Lana Del Rey got a chance to redeem herself as a serious musical artist on The Late Show with David Letterman on Thursday night, and by many accounts she succeeded.
"Lana Del Rey on 'Letterman.' Not bad!" tweeted Spinner.com.
"[Del Rey] killed on Letterman last night!" wrote BuzzFeed.
Del Rey performed her song "Video Games," which made her an internet sensation last summer. Even those virulently opposed to Del Rey (and they're a riley bunch), cannot deny that the Letterman performance was a huge step up from SNL.
"It was beautiful," host David Letterman said after her performance, jokingly inviting her back Friday and Monday nights to do it again. "Doesn't get much better than that," Letterman sidekick Paul Shaffer said, conferring.
Del Rey's first studio album, Born to Die, was released Tuesday to mixed reviews.
