VIDEO: Halle Berry Talks About Dealing With Domestic Violence As A Child

Halle Berry may be an Oscar-winning actress, but her most important role is the one she quietly plays at the Jenesse Center in Los Angeles, an organization that helps women who escape from abusive homes and relationships.

Berry, who grew up with a violent father who used to beat her mother, volunteers at the Center and spoke about domestic violence with CNN. "I think I've spent my adult life dealing with the sense of low self-esteem that sort of implanted in me. Somehow I felt not worthy," she said. "Before I'm 'Halle Berry,' I'm little Halle … a little girl growing in this environment that damaged me … I've spent my adult life trying to really heal from that."

The actress often donates to the center and visits to play with the children, she said. "To them, I'm just regular crackers." —ISHITA SINGH
