Firefighters rescued a woman on Wednesday, Nov. 20, who was trapped overnight after she fell 15 to 20 feet into a manhole in San Bernardino, California.
The San Bernardino County Fire Department was called to the site of the demolished Carousel Mall around 11 a.m. on Wednesday, after a passerby reported hearing screams for help from the manhole. According to local media, the woman had fallen into the manhole the night before.
The fire department said the woman was suffering from “possible lower extremity injuries” and was awake and talking with rescuers.

The mall closed in 2017 and was demolished in 2023 after it became a “magnet for illegal crime, including multiple fires, fatal shootings and even a deadly electrocution,” KTLA reported. The area was fenced off to the public, and it was unclear how the woman got into the site, the news outlet said.
