VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: ‘Vikings’ Star Moe Dunford Explains How New Movie ‘Utopia’ Handled Their Stunts

In a sit-down conversation with uInterview, Vikings star Moe Dunford recalled his favorite moments shooting his new film Utopia.

Dunford gave an overview of the movie’s premise, saying, “I guess it’d like Jurassic Park and Westworld but without dinosaurs and robots – you got a male fantasist walking around a theme park and also fulfilling their boyhood dream.”

An action-heavy movie with a surplus of stunts, Dunford explained how the cast and crew went about creating the shots. “James Bamford, our wonderful director, he’s been working as a stunt man for about 30 years,” he said. “He also had an incredible stunt team on this led by Stan Mir…I guess it’s just like going to school and learning moves and learning choreography, and then when it gets too rocky, the experts step in. But really, it was all a dance to do this movie. There was a wonderful team behind this, and in a way, it was sort of a departure from anything I’ve done.”

He continued, “We all sort of jumped in blind, and you know that I think what comes off on the screen is there’s a unity among the cast, there’s an ensemble, there’s an ensemble element, even though it’s myself and Charlotte [Vega] as the leads – everybody is sort of getting behind the nature of the dangers of AI and the dangers of disconnect, and even though it’s an actioneer, there are pseudo-philosophical themes running behind…or hopefully, there’s something for everybody in the background.”

Dunford reflected on the themes he thought the movie addressed. “I think it’s an actioneer,” he said. “It’s a bit of light entertainment, and I wouldn’t really get too heavy about it. We have a wonderful actress who is the centerpiece in this movie – Charlotte Vega – and it’s just about a guy trying to connect and reach out for connection amongst a crazy time of manipulated chaos.”

Asked for his favorite scene, Dunford, reminisced, “The crazier things got – and there was a lot of crazy days – the more fun and lighthearted our director James would be, and the cast would be, so I think it was any day we sort of looked around and asked ourselves, ‘What the hell is going on here?’”

Utopia can be streamed now on Fandango at Home, Paramount+ and Roku.
