VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: Leila George Shares The Message Behind Her New Series ‘Disclaimer’

Actress Leila George shared her experience working with director Alfonso Cuarón in their new Apple+ TV series Disclaimer in her new uInterview.

Disclaimer follows a television documentary journalist with a career built on revealing institutions’ transgressions. When she comes across a mysterious novel on her nightstand, she realizes that she might be a character in a forgotten story, with a grim future ahead.

Filmed through two different timelines, George reflected on the thriller series’ unusual narrative and what the audience should take away from the style. “I think it’s about, you know, catching ourselves before we jump to conclusions and make assumptions,” George told uInterview founder Erik Meers. “You know, we hear something, and we will project our own experiences and our own implicit biases onto a situation that has nothing to do with us, that we don’t know all the details of, but just based on something that we’ve gone through we will assume potentially the worst of something.”

She continued, “So I think [the show] is about making sure that we find the truth – what are the facts, what do we know for sure – before we completely tear down people’s lives, or write them off in disbelief and stuff like that. I think it’s really important to listen.”

George looked back on her favorite aspects of filming the show. “I had the best time working with Alfonso Cuarón, the director. I hope I get to work with him again,” she noted. “He was my favorite thing about this job, learning from him, and how I feel like I evolved as an actress just by being directed by him.”

Asked what she learned from her work with Cuarón, George explained, “He told me very early on that his favorite actors to work with were mostly non-actors…so I decided that from then on to trust that I had done all of my research – all of my scribbles and notes and analysis, and to just show up on set and think, ‘OK, what would a non-actor do.’ And it was so liberating, I mean, obviously, it involves working with someone like him that you can trust, you know – trust is a huge thing – but just being able to let go and trust him completely was so liberating, and I learned a lot.”

Disclaimer can now be streamed on Apple TV.
