VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: Dannii Minogue Dishes On Gay Dating Series ‘I Kissed A Boy,’ Difference Between How Queer Men & Women View Romance

Actress and singer Dannii Minogue shared her experience as the host of the U.K.’s first gay dating show, I Kissed a Boy, in her new uInterview.

I Kissed A Boy launched last year in the U.K. and just premiered on Hulu in time for LGBTQ Pride month.

The show follows ten single gay men who meet at an Italian country house called the “Masseria.” The men must meet “With a kiss—no small talk. No messages. Just one kiss to test out their chemistry,” according to producers. Before the show starts, the contestants are matched, and after they meet for the first time with a kiss, the men are encouraged to pursue the relationship.

Minogue recalls her reaction when she was pitched the show. “The first thing is the biggest shock – it was 2023, and there was no gay dating show. Period,” she said. “So it’s just shock, and then the excitement of the arrival, ‘Wow, we’re having this conversation,’ and for an incredible production company and it’s BBC – and then the complete fear: ‘What if it’s not done right?'”

She explained, “I have a very longstanding history with the community and love and respect… you know, there’s a lot of reality T.V., so I was very hopeful I was going to be right, and there was a lot of checks and balances before I actually just went, ‘Okay. I’m in.'”

Minogue continued, “Once I saw the casting, I was just like, ‘This is incredible.’ We get to see boys from all over the U.K. There’s different accents, we finally get to see different body shapes on T.V., we’re seeing, you know, one boy is [from a homophobic family], we’ve got body issues, we’ve got anxiety, all those things – everyone comes as they are. We just let it happen – this wasn’t reality T.V. where we were poking these guys and trying to make something happen, it all just comes out.”

The pop star recalled her favorite moments on the show: “The joys of watching our boys dance around to see them absolutely letting their inhibitions go, feeling that safe space…”

Minogue also hosts the I Kissed a Boy’s sister show, I Kissed a Girl, which follows the same model as I Kissed A Boy. The first episode aired in the U.K. on May 5.

She had noticed the differences in the way gay men interact with one another as opposed to lesbians.

Minogue recounted, “There was a huge, huge difference in making the show about the girls and making the show about the boys. I think the guys, they talk less. And that’s in general, even if you compare with straight girls and queer girls – and it’s more one-on-one conversations, whereas the girls will talk in a big group, but the guys, it’s less talking. It’s really considered, and I felt they were more aware of themselves than the girls. There’s more self-awareness in the space while girls are like, ‘think think think think think!'”

I Kissed a Boy is available to stream now on Hulu.
