After the dark comic interlude of Burn After Reading and A Serious Man, the Coen brothers go back to the desolate Western style of 2007’s Oscar winner for Best Picture No Country For Old Men in their newest offering, True Grit. The movie, which stars Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin and newcomer Hailee Steinfeld is an adaptation of the 1968 novel by Charles Portis.
The book had already been adapted in 1969 into an Academy Award-winning film starring John Wayne and Robert Duvall, but the Coen brothers have said their version will be more faithful to the book, according to IGN. "I don’t actually remember the movie too well, but I do remember it as being much more of a standard western, and the book is just an oddity. It’s a very odd book," said Ethan Coen.
The movie follows the tale of a 14-year-old girl hunting down her father’s killer, Chaney (Brolin), with the help of U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn (played by Bridges). Matt Damon’s character, La Boeuf, is also searching for Chaney, to bring him to justice for another murder. True Grit will open in theaters December 25, 2010. –AMY LEE
