The 79th Venice Film Festival kicked off last night with a screening of White Noise, the latest film from writer/director Noah Baumbach who is known for films like Marriage Story and Mistress America.
White Noise is adapted from the 1985 postmodern novel by Dom DeLillo and stars Adam Driver, Greta Gerwig, Baumbach’s wife and frequent collaborator, Raffey Cassey and André Benjamin, aka André 3000 from OutKast.
Along with starring in this new film, Gerwig has been working as a prolific writer and director recently helming Little Women. She is also directing the much-hyped Barbie movie which she co-wrote with Baumbach. Barbie’s principal photography went from March to July 2022.
Director Baumbach and stars Gerwig and Driver showed up for the film’s red carpet, as well as plenty of celebrities.
Hilary Clinton even appeared on the red carpet Wednesday evening, and it was later revealed that she will be presenting the DVF Awards honor on Thursday night which is for “extraordinary women who are dedicated to transforming the lives of other women.”
Other high-profile premieres at Venice will be the Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde starring Ana de Armas, Don’t Worry Darling starring Florence Pugh and Harry Styles and the new Darren Aronofsky film, The Whale.
The film festival recruits an international jury every year to determine the recipient of the prestigious Golden Lion for Best Film, and other major awards including best director, actor/actress and writer.
This year, the president of the jury is Julianne Moore.
The other jury members represent actors, directors and producers from Argentina, France, Italy and Iran just to name a few. You can learn more about the festival and stream the red carpets every evening at the festival’s website.
White Noise will be theatrically released by Netflix on November 30, then premiere a few days later on the streamer itself.
