Vanessa Redgrave and Terence Stamp play husband and wife in British indie hit Unfinished Song. The film, directed by Paul Andrew Williams, follows cranky and structured Arthur (Stamp) as he discovers the joys of music with the encouragement of his wife Marion (Redgrave). Together, they join a local singing group that revitalizes their marriage. “[Marion] loves [Arthur] to bits, and she knows he loves her to bits so the film kind of shows the different angles,” Redgrave told Uinterview exclusively. “Her view of him, which proves to be true, and he does come out with his true colors like a rainbow from behind the clouds. And the point is, you don’t have to be an eternal optimist to know that the clouds can’t cover the sun forever.”

As for her character Marion, who works as a teacher, the actress told Uinterview, “I think she’s an ordinary woman.” Redgrave continued, “She poured herself into trying to communicate to kids her love of life. And I think you can’t love life, unless you also know the downsides of life as well. And she feels she’s very lucky cause she’s got a husband who she knows loves her.”

Redgrave cultivated a deep respect for Stamp while working on the film. “He’s a brilliant actor,” she said. “He’s also a wonderful colleague, by which I mean that he enjoys the work. He enjoys exploring the character; he’s clearly always enjoyed the work. He puts himself into it, he puts himself into the character.”

Unfinished Song came out in limited release June 21. It’ll be available on DVD Sept. 23.
