The Vampire Diaries' last episode before its hiatus opened up a new story arc for Elena (Nina Dobrev) with the death of Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) .

Jeremy’s death was intended to bring Elena to a dark place, according to executive producer Julie Plec. Elena, like fans who watched the episode, continues to wonder if he may somehow still be alive. Whether or not Jeremy will eventually reemerge when The Vampire Diaries returns in March is unknown, but Elena will be coping with his loss as well as her still newfound vampirism. As a vampire without her humanity, Elena becomes similar to Katherine, yet remains bound to her truth-telling ways.

With Elena reeling, brothers Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) will struggle with how to help her. “’Do we hold her hand?’ ‘Do we make her have fun?’ ‘Do we send her back to school?’ [They have] all these questions and frankly have no idea how to manage,” Plec told Entertainment Weekly. “That’s the first episode when we come back; it’s them figuring out, ‘What do we do with her?’” In the process of trying to figure out what to do, the pair will become closer. Meanwhile, Caroline (Candice Accola) will also try to help Elena, though Elena is not eager to receive her guidance.

Elena has her own plans to move on after her loss, including rejoining the cheerleading squad — although her motives in the activity might not be completely pure. She’ll also adventure to a small town in Pennsylvania, and to New York with Rebekah (Claire Holt) and Damon as he relives a more reckless time of his life in the 70s. In addition to the traveling, the group is relocating to the Salvatore mansion since the other house burned down with Jeremy inside in the last episode.

The Vampire Diaries' fourth season will pick up again on Thursday, March 14 at 8/7c on the CW.
