The Vampire Diaries returns this fall with its fifth season, continuing the storylines of Damon (Ian Somerhalder), Elena (Nina Dobrev), Stefan (Paul Wesley), and the rest of the gang.

The CW fantasy series will pick up with move-in day at college – skipping the hot summer months where Damon and Elena’s romance heated up and Stefan remained at the bottom of the quarry, executive producer Julie Plec told Entertainment Weekly. Plec, who revealed the premiere’s title of “I Know What You Did Last Summer," stated, “We found a stylized way to show the audience how things went over the summer, what everybody was up to.”

Following the summer, Damon and Elena will succumb to everyday conflicts between couples. “One is keeping a secret from another trying not to hurt their feelings, trying to make them happy, little things that any normal couple would fight about and then hopefully make up over,” said Plec.“The biggest hurdles in their relationship come from external sources, people, ideas, notions that are trying to say they’re not supposed to be together. It’s really going to be more about them fighting to prove that they should be together and it’s okay.”

When Stefan emerges from the quarry, there will be a semblance of what he used to be, but he’ll also be markedly different. As for Katherine (Dobrev), she’ll be headed for Mystic Falls with the goal of attaching herself to Salvatore. Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Caroline (Candice Accola), meanwhile, might have a chance of reuniting despite his move to New Orleans – aka to spinoff The Originals.

Those who are going to college will be enrolled at Whitmore College, where Grams and Shane taught and Jenna took graduate classes in previous season. "We definitely did not want to have it be the college down the block that all of a sudden out of nowhere there’s a Mystic Falls University, but we knew we had to keep them close enough to home so that they could come and go as they pleased with a little bit of a road trip,” explained Plec.

As could be expected, no character – villain or hero – will be safe from being offed in The Vampire Diaries’ fifth season. Though the executive producer admits death(s) can be expected, she’s unsurprisingly tightlipped about the details of the impending demise(s).

The Vampire Diaries fifth season will kick off on the CW Oct. 3.
