Tameka Foster, the ex-wife of R&B singer Usher, has created an online petition calling Georgia to “drain, clean and restore” Lake Sidney Lanier to improve safety and remove dangerous debris. She also has requested stricter regulations for water-related activities.
The fashion designer’s 11-year-old son, Kile Glover, died 11 years ago after a jet ski driven by family friend Jeffrey Hubbard hit him while he was floating in an inner tube in the lake. Hubbard was convicted of multiple charges, including homicide by vessel, and sentenced to four years in prison and 15 years on probation.
On her change.org petition page, Foster wrote, “Draining, cleaning, and restoring Lake Lanier is not only necessary but also an opportunity to honor the memory of those who have lost their lives and prevent further tragedies.” The appeal has garnered more than 3,000 signatures.
According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, traffic on the lake has led to hundreds of boat collisions. Between 1994 and 2018, there have reportedly been over 170 boating and drowning deaths.

Lake Lanier is located northeast of Atlanta and reaches up to 160 feet deep. It also serves as drinking water for around five million people and creates hydroelectric power for the Atlanta metropolitan area.
Foster and Usher divorced in 2009 after two years of marriage. They share sons Usher Raymond V and Naviyd. The pair were in the middle of a very public custody battle when Kile Glover died.
