Tina Fey’s newest series, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, premiered its first season on Netflix Friday, and critics and audiences are already praising the comedy.
Ellie Kemper (The Office) stars in this half-hour sitcom, originally developed for NBC before being picked up by Netflix, about a girl rescued from an apocalypse cult who decides to start over in New York City.
Fey wrote the script with her co-creator Robert Carlock, who was also a creative force behind Fey’s massively successful 30 Rock. The new Netflix series also co-stars 30 Rock’s Jane Krakowski. “I trust them creatively so much that I will show up wherever they ask, know that I will be in great hands, and probably get one of the best roles of my life,” Krakowski told BuzzFeed News.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt unveiled its 13-episode first season Friday, and the show has been trending on Twitter ever since, with Netflix subscribers no doubt binge watching the series throughout the weekend.
Critics also love Kimmy Schmidt – the show has a 93% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
“Kemper is the show, and the success of the series hangs on her ability to be childlike but not idiotic, cheery but not irritating, naïve but dignified. Kemper’s just about perfect, and the show’s pretty damn good, too,” wrote Vulture’s Margaret Lyons.
