Janet Jackson's "Unbreakable"
At this stage of her career, Janet Jackson is at a time where she has to have not only a comeback, but more of a reincarnation of who she is as both a singer and person. After releasing innovative albums in both music and sexuality throughout the ’90s, she lost her career-spanning magic when her famous Super Bowl performance wardrobe malfunction had her scrutinized for the incident even though her music was still intact and receiving platinum status throughout the years after. Seven years later since her last album Discipline in 2008, Jackson finds herself stepping into the pop world of 2015 in not only innovating in terms of production, but also using this to step forward in keeping her music stature alive and solidifying herself in being the prolific singer she has been since her career started and standing up to conformity.
Working with the talented production team Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who helped shaped Jackson into who she is today, the album itself is filled with a different musical spectrum being experimented on that feels like we are right in the climax of Jackson’s career again. With tracks like “BURNITUP!” (feat. Missy Elliot) and “Dammn Baby” comes the fresh sound that Jackson has learned to embrace with keeping to the basics with a new twist to the music’s production. Then there are tracks like “After You Fall” that really show you the somber side of Jackson in showing her vocals off in a stripped down setting as if she is performing at a small club and letting the song speak for itself. The best track on the album is the first single to be released in “No Sleeep,” which reminds us of vintage Jackson in all of her glory and even has a special guest in J. Cole rapping a verse of not being able to sleep without having a significant other by your side at all times. With eclectic influences taking control of the album including the gospel-infused “Gon’B Alright,” it shows that Jackson has officially awoken from her shell and is ready to take on the pop world again and keep it in her grasp.
Janet Jackson plans an extensive touring schedule that goes well into 2016. Jackson is not stopping anytime soon.
