Uber Shooting Victim, 14, Squeezes Mother’s Hand After Being Declared Brain Dead
A 14-year-old girl, whose name has not been released, has squeezed her mother’s hand after doctors declared her brain dead.
On Sunday, one hour after the teen was declared brain dead, she gave the sign of hope. The victim’s organs were getting ready to be transplanted when she squeezed her mother’s hand.
Michigan State Police First Lt. Dale Hinz told People, “Her mom and her dad were told that she was brain dead and that it was unlikely that there was anything else they could do for her. She squeezes her mother’s hand and her mother begins to communicate with her.”
When she felt her daughter squeeze her hand, doctors were called in and were able to communicate with the victim. She was able to give the doctors and family a two thumbs up.
“It was a miracle,” Hinz says. “The one ray of hope and light that we have in this very dark situation.”
The young girl was one of the eight people shot by 45-year-old Jason Brian Dalton (pictured) on Saturday as he drove Uber passengers around Kalamazoo, Mich., according to the Michigan State Police. Six of the victims have died. Her grandmother and her were in the parking lot of a Cracker Barrel when Dalton opened fire.
After responding to her family, she was immediately rushed into surgery and is currently heavily sedated at Bronson Methodist Hospital.
