U.S. National Team Rider Magnus White Dies At 17 After Car Crashes Into Him During Training

American junior rider Magnus White has died after a car crashed into his bike in Colorado. 

USA Cycling shared the news of his death on Sunday in a statement they released. The team tweeted, “It is with an extremely heavy heart that we share the news that 17-year-old Magnus White has passed away in a training accident.”

“On Sunday, July 30th, we received the news that National Team athlete Magnus White was struck by a car on a bike ride in his home of Boulder, Colorado,” they wrote. “He was a rising star in the off-road cycling scene and his passion for cycling was evident through his racing and camaraderie with his teammates and local community.” 

They ended the statement by sharing their, “​​heartfelt condolences to the White family, his teammates, friends, and the Boulder community during this incredibly difficult time. We ride for Magnus.”

White was preparing for his next race in Glasgow, which is the Junior Men’s Mountain Bike Cross-Country World Championships when the incident occurred. A 23-year-old woman who drove a Toyota Matrix was driving behind him when she hit the teen. White fell off his bike into a fence while wearing a helmet and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

He started his career when he was just 10 years old at Boulder Junior Cycling. He won the Junior 17-18 Cyclocross National Championships in 2021 and went on to compete for the USA Cycling National Team. His last competition was in Hoogerheide in January of 2023, where he represented the U.S. at the Cyclocross World Championships. 

This summer was meant to be a new chapter in his career as he gained a new spot on the Mountain Bike World Championships team.

He is survived by his brother Eero and his parents, Jill and Michael
