U. Of Florida’s Student Body President Faces Impeachment For Spending $50,000 In Student Fees On Donald Trump, Jr. Event
In October 2019, Michael Murphy, the University of Florida’s student president, was caught spending $50,000 from mandatory student fees to bring Donald Trump, Jr. and his girlfriend Kimberly Guilfoyle to his campus to talk.
Murphy has been accused by the Tampa Bay Times, along with student Sen. Ben Lima, of “malfeasance and abuse of power.” Lima and members of the student body are planning to vote to impeach the student body president. “Murphy not only endangered students marginalized by the speakers’ white nationalist supporters but also abused his power to advance a particular political party at the expense of the students he should represent,” Lima said. “I don’t think you ever envision that it will be necessary to take this step. But it’s one of the measures that is there to hold our officials accountable. When the time comes, we shouldn’t be afraid to use it — no matter the level of government.”
The student newspaper, The Independent Florida Alligator, revealed emails between Murphy and a Trump campaign official, Caroline Wren.
Wren organized the event after she met Murphy at a party. Murphy has been known for attending Trump events, and his father has even donated more than $5,000 to Trump’s campaign.
