Tyrese Gibson Sues Home Depot For $1 Million, Alleges Racial Discrimination Over Being Denied Service

On Wednesday, Tyrese Gibson and two of his associates filed a lawsuit against The Home Depot, alleging that they “experienced outrageous discriminatory mistreatment and consumer racial profiling” when visiting a store in West Hills, California, in February.

The actor and the two other men, Eric Mora and Manuel Hernandez, are looking for $1 million in damages. Gibson claimed this amount represents the amount he’s spent at Home Depot during his life as well as the company’s violation of California’s Unruh Civil Rights Act.

The trio’s lawsuit states that Gibson waited in his car as Mora and Hernandez attempted to make a purchase with his credit card. When the two men received pushback, Gibson told the cashier that he was letting them use his credit card. But the cashier declined their purchase even after Gibson returned to the store.

The lawsuit states: “The cashier gave no reasonable explanation other than repeating ‘store policy’ and demanded to see a form of identification. The manager refused to speak with Gibson in person.”

The three men concluded that the Home Depot employees “purposely interfered with and refused to process the transaction based on their groundless suspicion of Gibson, Mora and Hernandez arising from their skin color.”

Gibson recorded part of the interaction, and a 10-minute clip of the argument was posted on YouTube.

The actor’s lawsuit argues that the company “refused to take any responsibility” for the incident and that it “doubled down, lawyered-up and treated Gibson, Mora and Hernandez and what happened to them as not worthy of any due consideration.”

In response, a spokesperson for Home Depot said that the company values diversity and does not “tolerate discrimination in any form.”
