Tyler Jarrell died Wednesday evening when he was thrown from a malfunctioning amusement park ride at the Ohio State Fair. He was 18-years-old.
The “Fire Ball” ride began to break apart mid-ride and, as can be seen in the graphic video below, an entire row of seats were dropped from the swinging amusement.
In all, seven people were wounded as a result of the ride’s malfunction. According to ABC News they are Tamika Dunlap, 36, Russell Franks, 42, Keziah Lewis, 19, Jacob Andrews, 22, Jennifer Lambert, 18, Abdihakim Hussein, 19, and a 14-year-old boy who’s name has not been publicly released. Three of the victims are in critical condition.
“Of course we want to get to the bottom of this,” Ohio governor John Kasich said in one of several press conferences about the event. “Make no mistake about it, it’s a very, very sad night for all of us.”
While the Ohio State Fair, one of the largest state fairs in the United States, reopened on Thursday after being shut down Wednesday night, the Fire Ball and all other rides will remain closed as an investigation is conducted.
The rides at the fair are operated by Amusements of America, who claim that the Fire Ball swings riders 40 feet into the air while simultaneously spinning them 13 full revolutions per minute.
Ride operators maintain that they conducted the proper and necessary tests and inspections prior to the ride being opened and that no malfunctions were found.
“The Fire Ball was being operated by one of the most respected and long established companies in our industry and was designed and manufactured by a leading international maker of amusement rides,” President of the Outdoor Amusement Business Association Robert W. Johnson said in a statement Thursday.
“This incident took place despite multiple independent inspections of the ride and only a full and complete investigation can identify the issue or issues that led to this tragedy.”
After the incident was reported, rides similar to the Fire Ball shut down around the country as a precautionary measure.
Wednesday was the first day of the Ohio State Fair which is scheduled to run through August 6.
