Two topless female protestors rushed the stage during a song by Woody Allen‘s New Orleans Jazz Band as they performed in Hamburg, Germany.
The women were attempting to bring attention to past sexual abuse allegations brought against the director. They had quotes written on their torsos from Allen’s daughter Dylan Farrow‘s open letter, speaking out about the alleged sexual abuse and assault that her father did to her as a child. “Stop the culture of silence!” the pair yelled before being pulled away by security.
The women were members of an international women’s rights group called Femen. Described as “a special force of feminism, its spearhead militant unit, modern incarnation of fearless and free Amazons” on its Facebook page, has held public protests over abortion rights and genital mutilation, among other issues.
Allen reportedly did not respond to the commotion, and continued playing. He later called the protest “stupid” to German news outlet SHZ. He has previously stated that he will not be commenting any further on the child abuse charges.
Controversy around Allen began in 1992 when he began a relationship with his lover Mia Farrow‘s adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn, whom he later married. At the same time, allegations erupted that Allen had sexually abused his and Farrow’s adoptive daughter Dylan, then aged 7. No charges were brought.
Dylan revived the allegations in a 2014 open letter, published by the New York Times. In it, she called Allen “a living testament to the way our society fails the survivors of sexual assault and abuse.” In his own NYTimes op ed, Allen denied all claims against him, and said Dylan had “been cheated out of having a loving father and exploited by a mother more interested in her own festering anger than her daughter’s well-being.” Still, no charges have ever been formally brought against Allen.
