There have been increased shark sightings at some beaches along the East Coast, and last week there were two attacks soon after each other in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Both victims were chomped last Thursday while on beach trips to beat the heat.
Karren Sites, of Pittsburgh, told WPDE that a shark latched onto her arm and she “was only in waist-deep water.” The incident occurred in front of her eight-year-old grandson as well.
A second biting was confirmed by the Myrtle Beach Police Department who said it occurred about a mile-and-a-half away later in the day.
The injury to the second victim’s leg was apparently less grievous than Sites, who needed surgery and hundreds of stitches in her arm, but both victims emerged alive.
Shark attacks are not common, but precautions that experts advise include avoiding the oceans at dawn and dusk, swimming with a buddy, and not swimming in areas with lots of fish near the surface or fishers using bait.
