The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater showcased performances of two new works, Hope Boykin’s “Finding Free” and Lar Lubovitch’s “Many Angels,” at their annual Lincoln Center performances.
Ailey is known for the beauty of their past works, notably “Revelations” and “Grace.”
Boykin’s “Finding Free” offers an Afrofuturist take, accompanied by the jazzy score. The dancers move in a group; when one member leaves for a hop, skip or jump, they always return seamlessly into the fold of the others. The dancers writhe and crawl on the stage, sporting anguished expressions.
Lubavitcher has been choreographing for 60 years. While his works have been performed by the Ailey company previously, “Many Angels” is his first piece explicitly made for the troupe. The performance features dancers moving to angelic music against a backdrop of clouds and ephemeral light, evoking a heaven-like serenity. The delicate, ethereal nature of the performance is pure beauty to behold.
