Twinkie Mogul Daren Metropoulos Buys Playboy Mansion For $100 Million

Daren Metropoulos bought the Playboy Mansion for $100 million, adding to his real estate portfolio, which already included the mansion’s sister Holmby Hills estate in Southern California.

Metropoulos closed on the Playboy Mansion for $100 million this month, according to a press release. Though Metropoulos is now the official owner of the mansion, Hugh Hefner, who sold the sister estate to him in 2009, will continue to live there for the duration of his life.

“The Playboy Mansion is one of the most iconic properties in the world and the crown jewel of Holmby Hills and the platinum triangle,” Metropoulos said in a statement. “For the last 45 years, Mr. Hefner has imbued the estate with a rich and storied legacy. The property’s heritage is not only that of a famous address; it is a true masterpiece in design, constructed by a noted architect for a family who played an important role in the development of Los Angeles in the early 20th Century.”

Metropoulus added, “I feel fortunate and privileged to now own a one-of-a-kind piece of history and art. I look forward to eventually rejoining the two estates and enjoying this beautiful property as my private residence for years to come.”

As Metropoulus noted, when Hefner’s tenancy ends, he will begin the process of rejoining the estates. Originally named Wolfskill Range, architect Arthur R. Kelly designed the property for department store heir Arthur Letts, Jr. in the 1920s.

Hefner had purchased the estate that became the Playboy Mansion back in 1971, paying $1 million for the structure that was built in 1927. Over the years, Hefner has lived at the property with his girlfriends – the Playboy Bunnies – and hosted the infamous parties at which the women keep to a lingerie-only dress code.

Metropoulos, a billionaire, is a principal at Metropoulos and Co., which owns Hostess Brands, the maker of Twinkies and other popular packaged snack goods.
