When the TWA Flight 800 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near Long Island in 1996, taking 230 lives, investigators ruled it an accident. Seventeen years later, aviation experts and investigators alike are coming in a new documentary to explain why they believe the plane crashed due to an external factor, reported CNN.
Merely minutes after taking off from JFK airport, the plane, headed to Paris, burst into flames and fell into the ocean. According to protocol, the plane was reassembled (pictured above) after the accident to help determine the cause of the crash. It was found that static electricity-ignited fuel fumes likely caused the crash. Many eyewitnesses disputed the finding, claiming that they saw a mass of fire or a missile launched at the plane before it fell from the sky.
The group of six in the documentary includes former employees of the National Transportation Safety Board, the Airline Pilots Association and TWA. Though they all agree that a high-speed projectile is to blame for the crash, they have yet to identify who might have fired the missile. The FBI, according to the group, took over the investigation and dismissed theories suggesting external causes for the accident during the initial probe.
The investigators and aviators who worked together on the documentary are petitioning to reopen the investigation of the 1996 TWA Flight 800 crash. An NTSB spokesperson said that the petition would be reviewed, but stressed the duration and intensity of the initial investigation, which lasted four years.
The documentary about TWA Flight 800 will air on July 17.
