NEW YORK, NEW YORK - NOVEMBER 6: Former President Donald Trump prepares to testify during his trial in New York State Supreme Court on November 06, 2023 in New York City. Trump is scheduled to testify in the civil fraud trial that alleges that he and his two sons Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump conspired to inflate his net worth on financial statements provided to banks and insurers to secure loans. New York Attorney General Letitia James has sued seeking $250 million in damages. His sons testified in the trial last week and his daughter Ivanka Trump is scheduled to testify on Wednesday after her lawyers were unable to block her testimony. British Lord Justice Mark Warby denied former President Donald Trump’s request to appeal the dismissal of his case against Christopher Steele and his company, Orbis Business Intelligence, in a London court.
Steele is a former British spy who worked at the Russia desk for Britain’s secret intelligence service, formally known as MI6. His work on the so-called Steele Dossier alleged salacious details about Trump’s private life and suggested that he worked with Russia to influence the 2016 election.
The ex-president sought permission to appeal the judgment in his data privacy case. In February, Judge Karen Steyn ordered Trump to pay 300,000 British pounds ($382,000) to the Orbis Intelligence Business for their legal costs in bringing a frivolous lawsuit.
Steele told reporters, “We now look forward to receiving the interim payment from Donald Trump and a further costs award once the court has adjudicated the details.”
The Trump team has not made any comment on the ruling so far.
The Steele Dossier, which was produced as opposition research for Republicans and then-Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, became public when BuzzFeed published it in full.
The dossier alleges that Trump had conspired with the Kremlin to win the 2016 election. There were other salacious allegations as well, such as that Trump had bribed Russian officials and participated in sexual acts with call girls in a Moscow hotel room.
This is one of many lawsuits in which Trump has been involved.
In February, Trump was ordered to pay author Jean E. Carroll $83 million in a sexual assault case.
