Trump Terminates His Ex National Security Adviser John Bolton’s Secret Service Protection After He Called President ‘Unfit For The Office’

National Security Advisor John Bolton confirmed that newly-inaugurated President Donald Trump terminated the Secret Service detail Bolton had previously been assigned.

Trump initially terminated Bolton’s protection during his first term, but former President Joe Biden restored it when he took office.

Bolton has required ongoing U.S. Secret Service protection ever since he left the Trump White House in November 2019 and has received continual threats against him from Iran. Vehemently opposing the 2015 nuclear deal that placed restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for U.S. sanctions, Bolton called on Trump after he took office to withdraw from the deal. Trump withdrew in May 2018, roughly a month following Bolton being hired as his national security advisor.

In September 2019, Trump fired Bolton, declaring he “strongly disagreed” with Bolton’s advice.

In 2020, Bolton published a memoir ripping Trump apart, declaring him, “ignorant of basic facts,” “easily manipulated by foreign adversaries” and “unfit for office.” Trump threatened Bolton with jail time in response.

Bolton told CNN in a statement, “I am disappointed but not surprised that President Trump has made this decision.”

He wrote, “Notwithstanding my criticisms of President Biden’s national-security politics, he nonetheless made the decision to once again extend Secret Service protection to me in 2021,” and continued, “The Justice Department filed criminal charges against an Iranian Revolutionary Guard official in 2022 for attempting to hire a hit man to target me. That threat remains today, as also demonstrated by the recent arrest of someone trying to arrange for President Trump’s own assassination.”

Bolton concluded, “The American people can judge for themselves which president made the right call.”

After learning of the $300,000 bounty that Iran had placed on his life, Bolton joked that it was “too low.”
