Donald Trump made history as the first sitting U.S. president to attend a Super Bowl but left before the fourth quarter as the Kansas City Chiefs faced a crushing defeat.
On Sunday, Trump, 78, attended Super Bowl LIX at Caesars Superdome, backing the Chiefs in their bid for an unprecedented three-peat. However, with Kansas City trailing 34-6 heading into the final quarter, the president departed the stadium early.
Reporter Nikki Schwab confirmed Trump’s exit on X, stating, “Trump has left the Super Bowl, per pooler @svdate. In fairness, Dr. Biden also left the @Phillies World Series early, during that no-hitter game against the @astros.”
Shortly after leaving, Trump made an unexpected post on Truth Social, shifting focus to U.S. currency. “For far too long, the United States has minted pennies, which literally cost us more than 2 cents. This is so wasteful!” he wrote. “I have instructed my Secretary of the U.S. Treasury to stop producing new pennies. Let’s rip the waste out of our great nation’s budget, even if it’s a penny at a time.”
During a pre-game interview with Fox News, Trump praised Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany. “I’ve watched this great quarterback, who’s got a phenomenal wife,” he said. “She is a Trump fan and a MAGA fan; I happen to love her; she’s a great person.”
While Trump’s presence at the Super Bowl was embraced by many, critics questioned the necessity and cost of the visit. The event required extra-tight security measures, particularly in light of last month’s terrorist attack on Bourbon Street.
