President Donald Trump’s Monday press briefing was interrupted by a shooting outside of the White House. The Secret Service escorted the president out of the briefing room immediately after getting word of the incident.
While the president was taken out of the news conference room, agents locked the doors with members of the media inside. Trump returned a few minutes later and informed the reporters of the shooting.
The incident occurred near the White House at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. It began when a 51-year-old man approached a Secret Service officer, claimed he had a gun and then pointed the object at the agent in “a shooter’s stance.” The officer then fired his own weapon at the suspect, hitting him in the torso.
Both the suspect and the Secret Service officer were taken to the hospital, although it has not yet been specified why the agent was taken.
The Secret Service Office of Professional Responsibility as well as Washington D.C.’s police department are investigating the officer’s actions.
When asked if the shooting had “rattled” him, Trump said, “I don’t know. Do I seem rattled?” He continued saying, “The world’s always been a dangerous place. It’s not something that’s unique. You look back over the centuries, the world has been a dangerous place, very dangerous place, and it will continue, I guess, for a period of time.”
Doug Buchanan, the spokesperson for D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services confirmed that the Secret Service had called around 5:55 p.m. requesting assistance “for a patient with a gunshot wound.” The suspect was treated for life-threatening injuries at the scene.
