On Friday, former President Donald Trump claimed his mug shot and criminal charges appeal to black voters.

Trump spoke at the Black Conservative Federation’s annual Gala in Columbia, South Carolina. There, he stated, “I got indicted a second time and a third time and a fourth time, and a lot of people said that that’s why the black people like me.”

Trump attempted to relate his issues to the issues faced in the black community. “Because they have been hurt so badly and discriminated against, and they actually viewed me as I’m being discriminated against,” he said.

Trump also claimed many black people are wearing t-shirts with his mug shot, taken in 2023 in Fulton County, Georgia.

Many members of the black community jumped to criticize Trump, calling out his hypocrisy for making racist remarks in the past. President Joe Biden‘s media director Jasmine Harris, who is black, wrote a statement about Trump.

“This is the same man who falsely accused the Central Park Five, questioned George Floyd’s humanity, compared his own impeachment trial to being lynched, and ensured the unemployment gap for black workers spiked during his presidency,” Harris said.

Nikki Haley‘s campaign manager, Betsy Ankney, also called out Trump’s remarks.

In the past, Trump has frequently been accused of racial insensitivity. Critics noted that he used words from Adolf Hitler’s book, Mein Kampf, in a speech. Trump also allegedly called Holly Robinson-Peete the n-word during her time on the show Celebrity Apprentice.
