On Saturday night, former President Donald Trump told a crowd in Iowa proudly that he’s been “indicted more than Al Capone.”
Capone, a legendary Prohibition-era Chicago mob boss, was ultimately charged with tax evasion because federal prosecutors couldn’t convict him on bigger charges.
The former president has started to use the line more frequently on the campaign trail.
Trump is the first former president to be charged with criminal activity on the state or federal level. He faces four indictments in four different jurisdictions. The charges include counts of fraud, keeping classified documents, RICO violations and scheming to interfere with the transfer of power to President Joe Biden.
He also faces a $370 million business fraud case, in which he delivered the closing arguments against the judge’s orders last week.
Trump now references his record with pride against Capone, noting that the infamous mob boss was only indicted once. Capone “would kill you” if “he didn’t like the way you smile at him at dinner,” the former president mused. “Over bulls—, I got indicted.”
Despite the indictments, Trump won the Iowa caucuses handily on Monday night, winning over 50% of the vote with low turnout across the state.
