HBO likely has no plans to renew True Detective for a third season following its disappointing second season.
HBO’s new programming chief Casey Bloys was featured in a new profile by The Hollywood Reporter. Per the profile, Bloys doesn’t seem to be keen on moving forward with a third season of True Detective. Per HBO sources, it’s more likely that Bloys will oversee a new project from True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto, who HBO signed to an exclusive deal through 2018.
Bloys, who previously served as HBO’s head of comedy, has the confidence of those who’ve been working with him for years on that side of the network.
“I have to assume his methodology in comedy will apply to drama, which is that he’s not a guy who comes in and tries to tell you how it is,” says Silicon Valley co-showrunner Alec Berg.
Echoing his sentiments was Veep‘s showrunner David Mandel, who said, “It’s about intelligence, and I believe the same sort of thinking and aiming before firing that Casey does will continue in the drama world, and they’ll come to appreciate his insights in the way that Lord knows we have.”
True Detective‘s first season, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, was a critical darling that got its best ratings during its season finale after slowly and steadily picking up viewers. Instead of continuing to grow in its second season – headlined by Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn and Taylor Kitsch – the season suffered both in the ratings and in its appeal to critics.
