True Detective’s second season, highly anticipated after its debut season earlier this year, already has some spoilers to get fans excited for what it will offer when it returns.
Creator Nic Pizzolatto has chosen to structure True Detective as an anthology series featuring standalone seasons. For the second installment, Pizzolatto has decided to have three all-new leads. “I’m deeply in love with each of them,” Pizzolatto said on the To the Best of Our Knowledge podcast. Although it’s been rumored that Jessica Chastain could be playing one of the characters, there’s been no word yet on casting.
True Detective‘s second season will also uproot the setting from South Louisiana to somewhere in California. Although Pizzolatto has confirmed it would be set in Los Angeles, he’s declined to specify the area in which the action will be taking place.
“Not Los Angeles, but some of the much lesser-known venues of California,” he said. “And we’re going to try to capture a certain psycho-sphere ambiance of the place, much like we did in season one.”
Pizzolatto is reportedly planning to write all eight of the season two episodes, as he did for the first season, according to Entertainment Weekly. However, director Cary Fukunaga is not likely to helm all of the episodes this time around.
In season one of True Detective, the story revolved around erstwhile detectives Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson), who were forced to revisit a case they’d begun working on together 17 years prior. The dark, evocative series received ample acclaim from critics and reeled in a large audience.
